Lara lives on the third floor, so you look at the row "2e of 3e". With two movers that is € 85 an hour. Four hours times € 85 is € 340.
You are at the station and hear an announcement.
You can play it as often as you like.
Vanaf welk spoor vertrekt de trein naar Amsterdam?
The announcer says the train leaves from platform six, instead of platform four ("in plaats van spoor vier"). Platform four is the old one. Listen for words like "in plaats van": what you hear first is not always the answer.

What is the inburgering exam?
With the inburgering exam you show that you speak Dutch and know how the Netherlands works. There are three exams: the basic exam abroad (A1), the exam at A2 and the Staatsexamen NT2 at B1.
Do you live in the Netherlands and have to integrate? Then you take the exam in the Netherlands. You have 3 years to do so.
The exam is made up of separate parts. Which parts you take and at which level depends on the law and on your route.

Which law
2013 or 2021
Did you have to integrate from 1 January 2022 or later? Then the Civic Integration Act 2021 applies. If it was earlier, the 2013 law applies.
Which level
A2 or B1
Under the 2013 law you take the exams at A2 or higher. Under the 2021 law your route sets the level. On the B1-route that is B1.

The five A2 parts cost €250 together. The Staatsexamen NT2 costs €200 for four parts.

If you do not reach B1 on the B1-route, you may switch to the A2 exams. Only after at least 600 hours of lessons at an accredited language school. The gemeente checks this.

KNM exam Netherlands
Who has to take it and who does not?
Whether you have to integrate depends partly on your nationality. If it applies to you, you get a letter from DUO.
Integration is required for, among others
- Asylum status holders
- Family migrants
- Other migrants who do not fall under an exception
You do not have to integrate if you
- are a citizen of an EU country, Liechtenstein, Norway, Iceland or Switzerland
- are under 18
- lived in the Netherlands for at least 8 years while of compulsory school age
- have reached the state pension (AOW) age
- are here for a temporary stay, such as work, study or an exchange
Fewer or no exams
- Do you have a Dutch diploma? Then you may not have to take the exams. This applies to vmbo, havo, vwo, mbo level 2 or higher, or hbo and wo taught in Dutch. You apply for this with DUO.
- A Staatsexamen NT2 certificate or diploma can replace part of the exams.
- Lived in the Netherlands for 10 years and worked here for at least 5? Then you can ask DUO for an exemption. It includes a conversation that costs €90.
- With a serious illness or disability you may take fewer or no exams.

From registering to diploma

Registering
For A2 and KNM you register in Mijn Inburgering and choose the date and place. For the Staatsexamen NT2 (B1 and B2) you register in Mijn DUO. It can take more than 6 weeks before you can take the exam, so register in time.

The exam day
For A2 and KNM, bring a valid ID. Without a valid ID you may not take part. You come alone. Others wait outside.

The result
For A2 and KNM you usually get the result within 8 weeks, by letter and in Mijn Inburgering. Speaking and Writing A2 can now take up to 16 weeks, DUO said in July 2026. For the Staatsexamen NT2 you see the result after about 5 weeks in Mijn DUO.

If you fail
You register again for the part you did not pass. Each attempt costs €50 again. Asylum status holders under the 2021 law get 2 free attempts per exam.

Your diploma
When you have passed everything you get the inburgeringsdiploma. The paper diploma arrives at your home within 8 weeks. A digital version is in Mijn Diploma's. On the Z-route you get a certificate.

If you are not finished in time
You have 3 years. Not finished and no right to extra time? Then DUO can give you a fine. Under the 2021 law that is at most €1,000 for the learning route. Asylum status holders never get a fine. Extra time is possible, for example for illness or a literacy course.

Frequently asked questions
When is the inburgering exam required?
When you have to integrate. That applies to asylum status holders and family migrants, among others. Citizens of the EU, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Switzerland do not have to integrate. Neither do people under 18. DUO tells you by letter whether it applies to you.
How do you get an exemption?
Do you have a Dutch diploma, such as vmbo, havo, vwo or mbo level 2? Then you can apply to DUO for an exemption. If you lived in the Netherlands for 10 years and worked there for 5, that is possible too. With a serious illness or disability, DUO decides whether you take fewer or no exams.
What happens if you do not integrate within 3 years?
If you have no right to extra time, DUO can give you a fine. Under the 2021 law that is at most €1,000 for the learning route. After that you get extra time to finish, between 6 months and 2 years. Asylum status holders never get a fine.
What does the inburgering exam cost?
Each part costs €50. For the five A2 parts that is €250. Under the 2013 law ONA is added for €40, so €290. The Staatsexamen NT2 costs €200 for four parts. The exam abroad costs €150.
How long until you get the result?
For A2 and KNM usually within 8 weeks. Speaking and Writing A2 can now take up to 16 weeks. For the Staatsexamen NT2 you see the result after about 5 weeks in Mijn DUO.
