Dutch has two words for "the": de and het. Every noun takes one of them: de stad (the city), het huis (the house). With een (a, an) there is nothing to choose: een stad, een huis.
Two quick rules
Two rules settle a lot of words straight away. Plurals are always de. Diminutives are always het.
Always de
- Every plural: de katten (cats), de boeken (books), de huizen (houses).
- People and jobs: de man, de leraar (teacher), de dokter.
- Words ending in -ing, -heid or -ij: de vergadering (meeting), de gezondheid (health), de bakkerij (bakery).
Always het
- Diminutives ending in -je: het huisje (little house), het meisje (girl).
- A verb used as a noun: het eten (the food), het lopen (walking).
- Languages: het Nederlands, het Engels.
When is it de?
Most words are de-words. For these groups you can be sure.
- Every plural: de katten, de vrouwen (women).
- People and jobs: de vader (father), de buurvrouw (neighbour), de tandarts (dentist).
- Words ending in -ing, -heid or -ij: de opening, de vrijheid (freedom), de bakkerij.
- Vegetables, fruit, trees and flowers: de wortel (carrot), de appel, de roos (rose).
- Numbers and letters: de vijf (five), de a.
- Words ending in -aar or -ie: de ambtenaar (civil servant), de familie, de politie.
When is it het?
There are fewer het-words. So these are the groups worth learning. They tell you a word is het straight away.
- Diminutives ending in -je, -tje, -pje or -etje: het tafeltje (little table), het kopje (cup).
- A verb used as a noun: het eten, het sporten (doing sport).
- Words that start with be-, ge-, ver- or ont-: het bezoek (visit), het gesprek (talk), het verhaal (story), het ontbijt. If such a word ends in -ing or -heid, it is de after all: de verhuizing (the move).
- Words ending in -ment, -isme and usually -um: het document, het moment, het museum. A well-known exception is de datum (date).
- Languages: het Nederlands, het Duits, het Frans.
- Points of the compass: het noorden (north), het zuiden (south).
- Metals: het goud (gold), het zilver (silver), het koper (copper).
- Words ending in -tuig, -ma and often -ion: het vliegtuig (plane), het diploma, het station.
Common het-words with no rule
Some everyday words are het for no clear reason. You see them all the time in A2 texts. These are best learned by heart.

Choose in three steps
- Is the word plural? Then it is de.
- Is it in a het-group, such as a diminutive or a language? Then it is het.
- Do you know it as a het-word with no rule? Then it is het. In every other case, choose de.
