English mostly uses one word to make a sentence negative: not. Dutch has two: niet and geen. Which one you need depends on the word you are making negative.
The main rule
Look at the word you want to make negative. Is it a noun with een, or a noun with no article? Then use geen. A noun is a word for a person, thing or idea: auto (car), geld (money), kinderen (children). In every other case, use niet.
Use geen
- A noun with een: een auto becomes geen auto.
- A noun with no article: geld becomes geen geld.
- A plural with no article: kinderen becomes geen kinderen.
Use niet
- A verb: Ik werk niet (I am not working).
- An adjective, a word that describes: Het water is niet warm.
- Something specific: with de, het, mijn or jouw, or a name.
Geen in examples
Each sentence below has a noun with een, or a noun with no article. So it takes geen. Geen always comes straight before that noun.
| Positive | Negative | English |
|---|---|---|
| Ik heb een pen. | Ik heb geen pen. | I do not have a pen. |
| Hij koopt een brood. | Hij koopt geen brood. | He is not buying bread. |
| Wij hebben tijd. | Wij hebben geen tijd. | We have no time. |
| Zij heeft kinderen. | Zij heeft geen kinderen. | She has no children. |
| Hij is leraar. | Hij is geen leraar. | He is not a teacher. |
Niet in examples
Are you not making a noun with een, or a noun with no article, negative? Then use niet.
| What you negate | Example | English |
|---|---|---|
| A verb | Ik slaap niet. | I am not sleeping. |
| An adjective | De soep is niet warm. | The soup is not warm. |
| Something with de or het | Dat is niet de bus. | That is not the bus. |
| Something with mijn or jouw | Dit is niet mijn tas. | This is not my bag. |
| A name | Hij heet niet Jan. | His name is not Jan. |
| A place | Wij zijn niet thuis. | We are not at home. |
Where niet goes
The place of niet is fixed too. Usually niet comes straight before the word it makes negative. When you negate the whole action, niet goes to the end.
| Situation | Place of niet | Example |
|---|---|---|
| You negate the verb | At the end | Ik werk niet. |
| With het, hem or something with de | After it, at the end | Ik begrijp het niet. Ik zie de bus niet. |
| Two verbs | Before the last verb | Ik kan morgen niet komen. |
| An adjective | Straight before it | De auto is niet groot. |
| A place | Straight before it | Ik ben niet thuis. |
